BRATTLEBORO -- To ensure motorists' safety while the Interstate 91 bridge over Upper Dummerston Road is removed, Upper Dummerston Road will be closed to through traffic where it intersects with the highway for up to a seven-day period.
This closure is scheduled to occur during either the last week of April or the first week of May. Actual closure dates and start time will be communicated a minimum of 72 hours in advance after the team is able to confirm forecasted weather conditions are acceptable for work to proceed. Once the closure begins, no through traffic will be permitted on Upper Dummerston Road through the I-91 right-of-way. Local travel on the part of Upper Dummerston Road that does not intersect with I-91 will be permitted. No project impacts to Upper Dummerston Road are anticipated for the week of April 20.
Route 30 under the bridge was reopened on April 17 after one week of closure due to work on the overhead structure. The speed limit on Route 30 near the work zone remains at 40 mph. This reduction will remain in effect through the Spring of 2016. Project-related truck activity on Route 30 will continue. Route 30 will be reduced to a single lane intermittently both day and night, with flaggers regulating traffic within the work zone.
Northbound I-91 traffic has been relocated onto the southbound bridge. Traffic will remain reduced to one lane in each direction on I-91 until completion of the new bridge in the Fall of 2015. Weather permitting, night work will be conducted Monday night, April 21, through Saturday night, April 26.
The West River Trail is closed at the Marina Trailhead and through access will not be permitted from the north. Truck activity on the West River Trail will be increasing heavily throughout the spring and summer. For everyone's safety, recreational users of the West River Trail should seek out alternative access points to the West River Trail or one of several other trails available to the community.
Signage at the Marina Trailhead and Rice Farm Road Trailhead will indicate current trail status. In addition, the project's website - www.i91brattleborobridge. com - is kept up to date on the current status of the trail. The trail is open from the northern trailhead to a point just north of the bridge construction area. The northern trailhead access location is on Rice Farm Road, about a mile south of the Iron Bridge.
The southbound bridge over the West River has been removed. No impacts to recreation boaters are anticipated for the week of April 20.
