GREENFIELD, Mass. -- For 75 years, Dillon Chevrolet has served customers in this pleasant town of 18,000 residents, not to mention all the way from Brattleboro, Vt., to Northampton.
Thomas Dillon, Jr., the amiable owner and general manager, and brother James, who serves as Service Manager at Dillon Chevrolet, see themselves as deeply tied to the community.
"We picture our business as interrelated with the community," said Tom. "Everything that we do here has an effect on the locale we work and live in and Franklin County at large. We see ourselves as meeting the needs of our fellow citizens, our neighbors, our family, and our friends. And that includes not only the sale and service of good, dependable automobiles, but also, as we always maintain, conducting business in a manner with ‘no pressure, no games, no gimmicks, and no fine print at an honest family dealership.’"
Maybe that’s why 70 per cent of Dillon’s commerce is repeat business. People like how they’re treated at the Chevy dealer at 54 Main St. They like the friendly personnel, the solid products, the "extra-mile" service.
In addition, customers see the same people sitting in the same chairs each time they visit Dillon Chevrolet. The dealership boasts of a staff of 34 full- and part-time employees. Gilda Gavis is a 35-year veteran as Office Manager. George Handschuh, the Truck Manager, has held that position for three decades, while Salesperson Ron Sicard has logged 27.
Another factor in Dillon’s success is Tom’s emphasis on the positive. "I guess I’ve always looked on things in a positive way," said the silver-haired Greenfield High graduate. "Right now I’m convinced it’s gonna be a very good year for Chevy and for Dillon Chevrolet. From the entry-level Chevy Spark that carries a price tag of $12,000, all the way up to the Chevy Volt, the electric plug-in, we’ve got a great lineup of new cars. We sold seven Volts between January and the present, showing there’s a market locally for this type of vehicle. Chevrolet figured the car’s main prospects would be city folks but it’s turning out to be a strong seller across the board."
Along with the Volt and Spark, the 2013 line of Chevys coming out soon includes the Traverse, Sonic RS, Malibu Eco (38 miles per gallon highway), Impala, Corvette 427, Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, Chevrolet SS, and Colorado.
The local dealership enjoyed a terrific September, according to its general manager. Tom, Jr. said he’s glad that the sales brought in lots of trade-ins, fortifying Dillon’s used car inventory. That supply was heavily reduced in a banner August during which 52 used cars were sold -- more than have of its supply.
Right now Dillon Chevrolet is looking forward to renovating its showroom and service areas "to make them bigger and better than ever," according to Tom. Plans include a service drive-up plus a doubling of the size of the showroom along with the service waiting area.
Dillon Chevrolet’s sales department is open Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday from 8:30 to 6; Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; closed Sunday. Service’s doors are open 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and are closed Saturday and Sunday.
