Annual gala raises
money for Sandy relief
WEST DOVER -- The Mount Snow Valley Chamber of Commerce held its annual gala on Nov. 8 at the Dover Forge Restaurant where the new board was installed and then awards were presented to community members who have demonstrated a lasting commitment to enhancing their community.
The Ralph and Verne Howe Community Service Award was presented to Steven Adams for his many years of involvement in the Deerfield Valley Farmers Day Fair. Presenting the award to Mr. Adams was Sarah Shipee, long time fair association member and friend. Sarah praised Steve for his ability to rally the community to ensure a strong volunteer base continues forward for many more years of fairs.
Adam Palmiter was presented the Chamber Person of the Year award by Chris Cooke for his incredible fund-raising efforts for local businesses over the past year. Chris passionately retold the story of how Adam quickly realized the magnitude of the damage to valley businesses and the necessity of their quick recovery for the Valley’s long term sustainability.
Randy Capitani paid tribute to Chickie Roa, longtime Chamber Employee and community member that had passed away in October. Recognition awards were also presented to Regina Werner, outgoing board member, and Laura Sibilia, who served as Executive Director from 2006-2011.
The Gala event helped raise over $3200 for Sandy Relief.
Tarallo-Falk receives distinguished service award
BRATTLEBORO -- JoEllen Tarallo-Falk, Ed.D., MCHES, of Brattleboro, director of the Center for Health and Learning, recently received the Distinguished Service Award 2012-13 from the Vermont Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
The Distinguished Service Award recognizes individuals with outstanding contributions to the health, physical education, recreation and dance fields. Recipients of this prestigious award have extensive experience in the field, demonstrated evidence of professional commitment and community service, and are highly recommended by their professional colleagues.
Tarallo-Falk has been actively working in health education in Vermont since 1979, with a Master’s in Education at the University of Vermont, and a doctorate in Education from Harvard University. Her work in Vermont includes serving as Interim Director of the Health Education Program at the UVM College of Education, School Health Specialist and School Health Training Center, Vermont Department of Education, Director of Curriculum and Assessment at Windham Southeast Supervisory Union, Health Teacher Leader and School Health Coordinator in two Vermont Supervisory Unions, and Director of the Center for Health and Learning, which has offered training and technical assistance to over 18,000 Vermonters in the past 10 years.
She has brought numerous curricula to Vermont schools, including writing health education curriculum for 12 school districts, and developing Safe Routes to School Programs for the state of Vermont, authoring the WalkSmart/BikeSmart Vermont! and co-authoring BikeSmart On-Bike curricula.
Tarallo-Falk established the Vermont Youth Suicide Prevention project and Vermont Suicide Prevention Training and Resource Center, which has trained teams from 33 of Vermont’s supervisory union and developed the award winning Umatter public information campaign, and Umatter Youth Suicide Prevention training. This training has received designation as a National Best Practice program.

Brattleboro’s Wireless Zone
to host fundraiser
BRATTLEBORO -- For the fifth straight year, Wireless Zone of Brattleboro will host a charity event on Dec. 8. Hot Country will do a four-hour live remote, while representatives from Project Feed the Thousands, Windham County Humane Society and Marine Corps Toys for Kids will be on hand to take donations. Kurn Hattin Bids farewell
to coach Dave Baldasaro
WESTMINSTER -- After 16 years of dedicated service to the children of Kurn Hattin, Dave Baldasaro was bid farewell. Dave was the children’s Processing Coach and had also been Assistant Principal for most of those years. At the annual Fall Banquet and Sports Award Ceremony, Dave was given multiple gifts of thanks and appreciation. The children’s and Dave’s tears said it all. He will be greatly missed. Thanks Dave and good luck in your next venture. marketing and communications
MARLBORO - Marlboro College is pleased to announce that Matthew Barone, of North Smithfield, R.I., has accepted the position of director of marketing & communications. He will start in this new role in December, and will be instrumental in advancing regional and national awareness about the college and its programs.
"Matthew is coming to Marlboro at an important time in the development of our new marketing and communications plan, and we welcome him as an experienced and creative leader in this process," said Marlboro President Ellen McCulloch-Lovell.
Barone is an education communicator and administrator with more than 10 years’ experience, most recently as the director of marketing and communications at Bancroft School, in Worcester, Massachusetts. As the first director in that role, he built support from the ground up for communications proposals that have comprehensively enhanced the school’s image for a variety of audiences.
He also served as director of communications at Walnut Hill School for the Arts and as the first public relations officer and department head for the Harvard University Art Museums. At Walnut Hill he hosted a national symposium on arts education with former Senator Edward Kennedy in Washington, D.C. and in partnership with educators at Harvard University.
Barone’s background in higher education goes beyond administration. He taught communications and public relations as an adjunct instructor at both University of Rhode Island and Salem State College. He also worked for WGBH in Boston, in support of programs for colleges and universities and other special projects.
Barone has a master’s degree in communications management from Emerson College, and a bachelor’s degree in mass communications with a history minor from Quinnipiac University. He has won several Communicator Awards for his excellent work in publications, including a 2012 gold award for excellence in design.

Ninety Nine raises money
for Boys & Girls Club
BRATTLEBORO -- During the month of October, The Ninety Nine Restaurants held their annual Boys & Girls Club fundraiser, which this year raised more than $426,000 for local chapters of the clubs in communities throughout New England and New York. The Brattleboro restaurant raised $8,292 for the Boys & Girls Club of Brattleboro.
