Brattleboro couple wins award for energy efficient new home
BRATTLEBORO -- Ted and Andrea Lemon of Brattleboro have received a "Best of the Best" award from Efficiency Vermont for energy efficient new home design. The couple served as general contractors and provided much the overall design. The project’s team of designers, builders, and energy professionals, included Eli Gould of Ironwood Brand, West Brattleboro, and Marc Rosenbaum of South Mountain Company, West Tisbury, Mass.
The two-story, three-bedroom home was designed to be Passive House certified, meaning that it is an ultra-low-energy building. Features include a solar electric system, a solar hot water system, energy efficient lighting, and a whole-house ventilation system that transfers heat from expelled air to incoming, fresh wintertime air. Due to superior insulation and large south-facing, high-performance windows (optimizing heat gain in winter and minimizing it in summer), the house holds heat well and needs little mechanical heating. Instead of a central heating system, the house has a small pump that boosts the warmth of ambient air and distributes it in the house.
The "Best of the Best" awards, given annually by Efficiency Vermont, recognize high achievement by builders, architects, and contractors using energy efficiency and sustainability practices to construct and renovate Vermont buildings. Award categories include commercial and
