Grafton Village
wins cheese award

GRAFTON -- Local cheesemakers received national recognition for their products at the 31st annual American Cheese Society competition in Sacramento, Calif., on July 31.

Grafton Village Cheese took first place for Shepsog, a mixed-milk cheese; first place for its Queen of Quality Clothbound Cheddar; second place for its Bull Hill; third place for its 2 Year Aged cheddar; and third place for its Bear Hill.

A record number of Vermont cheesemakers -- 23 in total -- submitted cheeses to be judged at the competition this year.

"Tonight saw a record win from Vermont at the American Cheese Society Awards," said Tom Bivins, Vermont Cheese Council executive director. "Sixteen of the 23 cheesemakers who submitted cheeses walked away with at least one ribbon. And for Vermont to take home a Best in Show for the second year in a row, truly clinches our standing of Vermont being home for many of the world’s finest cheeses."

The Best in Show First Place was awarded for Farms for City Kids Foundation/Spring Brook Farm’s Tarentaise Reserve cheese.
