TREE LIGHTING: Building a Better Brattleboro will host its annual Tree Lighting in Pliny Park, corner of Main and High streets in downtown Brattleboro, on Friday, Nov. 30, at 5:30 p.m. Shoppers may welcome Santa to town and enjoy the downtown light displays, windows, and decorations including special lights for the Brooks House. Seasonal music will be provided.
GINGERBREAD COMPETITION: The Gingerbread Man will be touring downtown stores and streets to greet children, parents, and grandparents on Saturday, Dec. 1.
Children may compete in the Gingerbread Cookie Decorating Workshop at the Brattleboro Coop to decorate pre-baked cookies from 10:30 a.m. to noon. To register, call 802-246-2842 or by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org. The Gingerbread Man will be stopping by at the end of the workshop to lead a parade of decorated gingerbread cookie entries to the Robert H. Gibson River Garden, 157 Main St., Brattleboro, for the contest with judging beginning at 2 p.m. Prizes will be provided by King Arthur Flour.
Those not competing are also welcome to bring homemade cookies for the cookie sale benefit table at the River Garden to help raise money for Youth Services Big Brother Big Sister Program.
CHEESE TASTING: The Brattleboro Cheese Shop & Cafe’s is offering a new series of cheese tastings, called "The School of Cheese.
Those attending are also encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item for the Drop-In Center’s food shelf. WORLD AFFAIRS TALK: Ken Furst, Director of the World Affairs Council of Western Massachusetts will speak at the Windham World Affairs Council meeting on Friday, Nov. 30, at 7 p.m. at the SIT Graduate Institute/World Learning, Rotch Hall, Room 108/109, off Kipling Road in Brattleboro.
Furst’s talk, "Afghanistan: A First-Hand View from Kabul and What the Afghan People Really Say," is free and open to the public. Coffee with the speaker will begin at 6:30 p.m.
FOOD PANTRY: The Guilford Cares Food Pantry is open Thursday, Nov. 29, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and every Thursday, except the first Thursday of the month at the Broad Brook Grange, 3940 Guilford Center Road.
