Chess Classes

Starting Jan. 11, the Brattleboro Recreation & Parks Department is hosting chess classes to help children develop their problem solving skills and increase their attention span. Instruction will introduce basic principles of chess to participants, along with simple strategies and tactics, and provide a venue for them to play practice games. Eric Strickland will be the class instructor.

Beginners, grades 2 to 6, assumes no prior knowledge of the game. Intermediate: For players who know the basic checkmates, and at least a few tactics and strategies.

Fridays: 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. (Intermediate) and 4:45 to 6 p.m. (Beginners - maximum eight Students) at the Gibson-Aiken Center, 207 Main St.. The cost of the eight-week program is $25 for residents and $40 for non-residents.

Gymnastics Classes

The Brattleboro Recreation & Parks Department is hosting Session III Gymnastics Classes from 3:30 to 6 p.m. at the Gibson-Aiken Center. Classes will begin the week of Jan. 21, and will run for an eight-week session. The cost is $60 residents and $75 for non-residents. Late registrations will be pro-rated. Classes are run Tuesdays through Saturdays for ages 18 months and up.

There is also an Open Gym time available on Thursdays for ages 1 to 5 with parent for $4 or Saturdays for ages 6 and up for $6.

Lorraine Cote will direct the Gymnastics Program. She has a B.S. in Physical Education and Health and has taught gymnastics for 16 years in private clubs. She has been associated with Brattleboro Gymnastics for the past 18 years.

Ice Skating Lessons

Beginning Jan. 11, the Brattleboro Recreation & Parks Department is hosting ice skating lessons at the Nelson Withington Skating Facility at Living Memorial Park. Mollie Burke will be teaching the children’s classes on Saturdays and Jude Rondeau will teach adult classes on Friday mornings.

Children’s Saturday class dates are five weeks long with beginner children from 10:30 to 11:05 a.m., advanced beginner children from 11:10 to 11:45 a.m. and advanced beginner II or intermediate children from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. Adult Friday morning classes are from 10:30 to 11:10 a.m.

The cost for the children’s lessons are $40 for residents and $55 or non-residents. For adults, $40 and $60.

Kung Fu Class

The Brattleboro Recreation & Parks Department is hosting Running Fist Kung Class at the Gibson-Aiken Center in the Blue Room on Monday and Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. Register at any time. Sifu Lew Henderson, the instructor, has studied Martial Arts for 37 years, and is also a Charter Member of the American Federation of Martial Arts. He also has achieved the Silver Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Federation of Martial Arts.

Running Fist Kung Fu is an eclectic style of Kung Fu that is taught through a series of concepts rather than a technical approach of martial arts. This approach ensures that the student can easily adapt to the variables of a given situation.

Speed Skating Program

Starting on Jan. 12, the Brattleboro Recreation & Parks Department will be hosting a speed skating program at the Nelson Withington Skating Facility at Living Memorial Park. The sessions are from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. for five weeks through Feb. 16.

Indoor Soccer

Starting Jan. 8, the Brattleboro Recreation & Parks Department is hosting a session of Co-ed Adult Indoor Soccer Program on Tuesdays from 7 to 9 p.m., running through Feb. 26. Participants of all abilities ages 18 and up are welcome. Pick-up games will take place in the Gibson-Aiken Center. There will be no teams or officials. Indoor balls and pennies will be provided.

The cost for the session is $20 for residents and $40 for non-residents. The drop-in fee is $10. Wear shin guards and clean appropriate footwear. Registration will take place the first night, but others are welcome to join at anytime if space is available.

Zumba Classes

Starting Jan. 14, the Brattleboro Recreation & Parks Department is hosting a series of Zumba Classes for eight weeks. Maribeth Fonda, Licensed Zumba instructor will instruct. They will be held Mondays from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. and Thursdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Gibson-Aiken Center. The cost for once a week is $75 for residents and $95 for non-residents and $125/$145 for twice a week. Drop-in is $10 a class.
