ELYSIAN HILLS WALK: Bill and Mary Lou Schmidt of Elysian Hills Tree Farm will host a relaxed walk through their land in Dummerston on Thursday, Aug. 22, at 6 p.m. One focus of this walk will be on special and unusual trees, like a huge oak and cherry.
The Schmidts will also talk about some non-native and native invasive plants and trees, including barberry, buckthorn, honeysuckle and oriental bittersweet (or their remains), what is being done to control them over the past several years. Among the native invasives hikers will view are some beech trees and their progeny and hayscented fern.

SOLAR ARRAY: SunFarm and the Clean Energy Collective will welcome local individuals and businesses to the grand opening of Vermont’s first community-owned solar array, Putney Community Solar Array, on Friday, Aug. 23, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at 601 Bellows Falls Road in Putney.
At the event, attendees can learn about community-focused renewable energy and have a guided tour of the array. Refreshments will be provided by A Vermont Table Catering. There will be activities and face painting for children. The event is free and open to the public.

RIDING SKILLS: The Putney Bicycle Club is sponsoring two free bike riding skills building clinics this weekend. The first is Road Riding Skills catering to the new road cyclist and anyone ready to take the next step in road riding proficiency. Coaching will include descending, climbing, shifting, drafting, pace line, group etiquette and safety. Participants should meet at the West Hill Shop on Saturday, Aug. 24, at 9 a.m.
The second clinic is for mountain bikers who want to learn basic single-track trail riding skills and gain more confidence maneuvering over obstacles. For this clinic, meet at the Putney School main parking on Sunday, Aug. 25, at 9 a.m.
Casey Blust will be the lead instructor for the weekend. He is a veteran road and MTB racer, a USCF licensed coach and Yale’s Women’s Cycling Team for two years.

In South Newfane...
PARADE AND FESTIVAL: The Rock River Revival Parade and Festival will be held on Sunday, Aug. 25, from noon to 4 p.m.
This is a celebration of life and recovery along the Rock River on the second anniversary of Tropical Storm Irene. The parade will lead with the banner "Together We’re Stronger."
The parade will start at noon on Dover Road (midway between Williamsville covered bridge and Parish Hill bridge) and will end at South Newfane village. The festival will start immediately after the parade. There will be fire trucks on display, a super raffle, live music, rock-building contests, face painting, bake sale, and more.

MUM SALE: The Vernon Historians will be having a Mum Sale at the Vernon Historical Museum located at 4201 Fort Bridgman Road this Sunday, Aug. 25, from 2 to 5 p.m. They will have a large assortment of mums for sale from Griffin Gardens.
The Museum is open an extra hour until 5:00 PM on that date, to allow those attending the One Room Schoolhouse Reunion from noon to 4 p.m. at the Vernon Recreation Area, to visit the museum after their reunion.
