GARDEN CLUB MUM SALE: The Brattleboro Floral Arts & Garden Club will hold its annual mum sale on Saturday, Sept. 21, starting at 9 a.m. The sale will take place outside the Pieciak Accounting offices, opposite the Brattleboro Town Common.
The chrysanthemums are available in a wide range of colors and sizes and bred for long-lasting bloom. They are reasonably priced to support beautification of the community.

UNION VISITING DAY: Union Institute & University, a non-profit, private, accredited university designed for busy adults will host a visiting day for the Master of Arts with a Concentration in Counseling Psychology program. The event will take place Saturday, Sept. 21, from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the university’s New England Academic Center at 28 Vernon St., in the Marlboro Graduate Center.

YARD AND BAKE SALE: A yard and bake sale will be held at First Baptist Church, 190 Main St. in Brattleboro, on Saturday, Sept.
The yard sale will have a large variety of household items, dishes, vases, linens, blankets, books, children’s small toys, and a variety of baby clothes.
Weather permitting, the sale will be held outside. Proceeds from the yard sale will be used to help defray the cost of the heating oil usage during the winter months. For information call 802-254-9566.
SWAP PROGRAM: The Windham Solid Waste Management District Swap Program on Old Ferry Road is open every Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until noon. It is a free outlet for materials that are still usable, but for which there is no traditional re-use program. People are asked to use all other available outlets before bringing items to the Swap Program. Items brought in may be passed along to other non-profit groups.
Items available this week include: table lamps, dresser mirror, crib, exercise bike, crock pot, microwave trays, artificial Christmas tree, baby bouncer, bag of packing peanuts, baby bath, bathroom sinks, Thermoses, ironing board, puzzles, baskets, Styrofoam coolers, metal cabinet, baseboard heat cover, tabletop humidifier, Nordic Track, dish drainers, Hoky sweeper.
DRIVER SAFETY: The AARP Driver Safety Program, a classroom driver refresher course, will be offered at the Brattleboro Senior Center on Monday, Sept. 23, beginning at 9:30 a.m. There will be a lunch break at noon and participants may bring a lunch or purchase one at the Senior Center.
The course explains changes that occur in vision, hearing, and reaction time as we age and provides useful driving safety tip for handling these changes. The course also reviews the impact of changes in vehicles and roadways that impact driving safety. Some major auto insurance carriers in Vermont offer discounts to participants in the program. Those interested in the availability of discounts should contact their carrier to see if such a discount is available.

SENIOR MEAL: The Halifax monthly senior meal will be held on Friday, Sept. 20, at noon at the Halifax Community Hall at the intersection of Brook and Branch roads in the village of West Halifax.
The menu will include chicken salad on lettuce leaf, baked potato, vegetable, rolls and dessert.

In Saxtons River...
CANNING WORKSHOP: As part of its continuing series of food security workshops, the Community Garden Collaborative will begin its new season with a hands-on, participatory canning workshop, on Sunday, Sept. 22, at 1 p.m., at Christ’s Church on Main Street in Saxtons River.
Because this workshop is limited to 15 participants, registration and pre-payment of the $6 materials fee are required. Call Tim Stevenson, 802-869-2141 to register. Light refreshments will be available.
The workshop will be led by Athens neighbors, Treah Pichette and Sherry Maher, who do extensive gardening and food preserving, often together. They will teach two different canning methods: the hot water bath canning procedure (making applesauce), as well as the pressure canning method, (tomato salsa). Each participant will go home with a canning jar of salsa and applesauce.
