NEWFANE -- A 57-year-old Newfane man is in custody after authorities said he beat a couple with a metal pipe.

Police arrested Harry W. Goddard late Saturday after members of the Vermont State Police responded to an alleged assault along Route 30.

When Trooper Nader Hashim arrived on scene at about 10 p.m., he learned that the couple had walked over to Goddard’s home and he walked out the door swinging some sort of metal pipe.

Through the investigation, Hashim said Goddard hit the man at least three times with the weapon and the woman once.

What caused Goddard to attack the 48-year-old man and his wife is unclear at this time but alcohol may have been a factor.

Both were treated for minor injuries at the scene, their condition at this time is unknown, Hashim said.

Goddard was cited for aggravated assault and housed at Southern State Correctional Facility on lack of $5,000 bail.

He’s scheduled to appear in Windham County Superior Court Criminal Division on Aug. 7 to answer the charge.
