BRATTLEBORO -- Local officials are investigating the cause of a Saturday evening fire at a second-floor apartment at the Lawrence Block. No residents were injured.
Members of the Brattleboro Fire Department were called to the scene on South Main Street shortly before 6 p.m. Upon arrival, the fire was upgraded to a second-alarm and crews from Putney, Keene, N.H., and Greenfield, Mass., were called to assist.
According to Fire Chief Mike Bucossi, two attack lines were stretched to the second floor and the fire was contained to two large storage closets off the second-floor hallway. Each apartment of the three-story, 10-unit multi-family dwelling was searched by firefighters to ensure everyone was out.
The fire was declared under control just after 7 p.m. Some moderate damage was reported on the second floor; smoke damage in a stairwell and part of the third-floor hallway.
None of the tentants were injured, but one firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion at the scene.
The building has not been reoccupied as investigation and repairs take place. Those living in the building are either staying with family or friends or at a Red Cross shelter set up at the Gibson Aiken Center.
Firefighters battled a blaze at the same location in January, 2008, and their efforts that time were compounded by bitter cold and snow.
