Font ResizeBRATTLEBORO -- The Brattleboro Police Department is warning property and business owners to take extra care to protect valuables after a rash of burglaries hit the area over the past week.
There were at least three burglaries since the Fourth of July, and the police are investigating an additional one, Det. Michael Carrier said Monday, though he said he could not release any information about the latest burglary which is under investigation.
"We’re asking people to use common sense," Carrier said. "If people want to get in, they will. They’ll smash a window or break down a door so it makes sense to take precautions."
On July 4 the Brattleboro Police Department reported to a break in at the Windham Veterinary Clinic on Noah’s Lane.
Then, the next day, someone tried to break in to Mac’s Barber Shop on Putney Road and Diane’s Hair Express on Canal Street.
Diane’s Hair Express was broken into for the second time in a week.
Forced entry was used at each location to gain entry into the businesses.
Carrier said it was too early to say whether the break-ins were related.
He said business owners should leave as little money as possible on the premises after hours, and he said if a business has an alarm system, it is important to make sure that the system is working.

And if property owners are out of town, Carrier said neighbors should be told and it even makes sense to put a call into the police to let them know.
"Even if there is a burglary you should try to limit the monetary loss," Carrier said. "Everyone can take precautions. You should not make it easy for them."
