Support for Cain
Editor of the Reformer:
I have known Mary Cain for years. I am proud of her courage to run for Senator for Windham County. She has accomplished more in meeting people throughout the area in the past few weeks, than most people can, in a year.
She told me how concerned she was when a single parent from West Townshend told her he pays $1,400 a month for health care for his family. That’s more than a mortgage payment.
She told me how upset she was when a waitress from Athens told her, her employer gave her no leeway during Hurricane Irene, when she had to commute over 90 miles to get to work because all the roads were impassible.
Mary Cain is a compassionate person who really listens to you and helps.
I mentioned to her that my daughter who is a single parent, needed medical attention and she wasn’t getting any help here. Mary Cain suggested that I contact Sen. Bernie Sanders. The state of Vermont did not want to pay for her to have an operation in Boston. Within three days, we had a response from Sen. Sanders. She now is getting
Mary Cain really would be a great Senator for Windham County. She is one of us, the 99 percent. She believes that health care is a human right.

Support for White
Editor of the Reformer:
Although I usually do not weigh in on contested primary races, this year’s Windham County Democratic Senate primary between Senator Jeanette White and Mary Cain is an exception. Having entered the Vermont House the same year Senator White began her own service, I have had a close and objective vantage point for seeing Jeanette develop into a highly effective legislator and voice for the people of our County.
There are few more contentious and overly politicized issues in any state legislature than reapportionment -- the process which potentially affects each member’s political survival and too often can determine partisan control for the coming decade. As Vermont faced that task this year, Jeanette was chosen by the Leadership to chair a specially created Senate committee working alongside the House to redraw districts for all of Vermont’s 180 legislators.
Senator White led the completion of that difficult task in a way which received bipartisan praise for its fairness and thus entirely avoided the sort of bitter partisan litigation which so often is seen in other states. In short, she quietly and effectively did it the Vermont way.
This is just one example from among many showing why Windham County voters can truly be proud of Jeanette’s service and should vote to return her as to the Vermont Senate.

Support for Toleno
Editor of the Reformer:
As a Brattleboro District 3 resident, I would like to warmly encourage all eligible voters to head to the polls on Tuesday, Aug. 28, and vote for Tristan Toleno.
Tristan is a passionate and active advocate for Brattleboro and I am confident his critical thinking and steadfast commitment will represent us well in Montpelier. In particular, I support his efforts to increase access to local, healthy and affordable food options for our community and further developing a comprehensive local and regional food system integrating sustainable approaches to land use and energy production. I also support his interest is realizing a statewide, affordable single payer health care system. Furthermore, I support Tristan’s commitment to making sure Vermont Yankee is closed as soon as possible and encouraging policy and regulatory solutions to hold the Entergy Corporation accountable for pollution, waste storage and site cleanup. Most of all, I will be voting for Tristan because of his integrity and honesty. He is willing to have honest, authentic dialogue with constituents, not afraid to make mistakes and actively seeks input form residents.
I could not think of a more qualified and engaged individual to replace our outgoing District 3 Representative, Sarah Edwards, who I thoroughly respect and enthusiastically endorsed his candidacy. Please cast your vote for Tristan Toleno on Tuesday, Aug. 28.

Support for O’Connor
Editor of the Reformer:
I am writing this letter in support of Kate O’Connor. I have just finished reading a book that Kate has complied in her travels with past Governor Howard Dean who attempted to run for the Democratic Presidential nominee several years ago. I am in absolute awe of the experiences that this young woman has had the opportunity to acquire during this extremely exciting endeavor.
Kate’s background as a life long Vermonter, Brattleboro resident, on state and a local level, and her vast experience working with Vermont Gov. Howard Dean for over 10 years and assisting with other governors, past and present, has to have given her one of the most incredible backgrounds one could have to be able to understand the legislature and issues that are on constant pressure at the local and state level.
Please realize the background of Kate. Her political family, her father, once House Speaker Tim O’Connor, who has served the Legislature many years, Brattleboro Town Moderator, for I can’t guess how long, and the many committees that Tim has served on state and local. Not to mention, her mother, Martha O’Connor, her involvement on the state board of education and the many local committees in Brattleboro, as well as her participation on the Brattleboro Selectboard.
I can’t think of any person who has more knowledge of local and state issues with so much pressure, experience and knowledge put on her by family and government that could serve the people of Brattleboro with more vigor and enthusiasm
I certainly would appreciate seeing this very talented life long Vermonter in our legislature representing Brattleboro. Kate is running for the Brattleboro State house Democratic representative nominee for district 3. This primary vote is scheduled for Aug. 28.
