Font ResizeBRATTLEBORO -- A man who jumped out into traffic on Route 5 Wednesday morning on the Putney/Westminster town line died after being struck by a pick-up truck.
According to a press release from the Vermont State Police, Douglas Plitt, 39, of Putney, was walking north on the southbound shoulder when he stopped, hunched down into a "tackling position" and stepped into the path of the vehicle.
Plitt struck the rear passenger side of the truck bed and sustained head injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel at 9:36 a.m.
Plitt was not carrying identification at the time of his death, but police were able to identify him after his family reported him missing.
The state police responded to 876 Route 5 at 9:28 a.m. after receiving a report of a vehicle crash involving a pedestrian.
Myron White, Jr., 46, of Poultney, was driving a GMC 3500 heavy duty pick-up southbound on Route 5 when Plitt ran into the road.
Neither him nor his three passengers were injured.
Investigation at the scene indicated the operator was not at fault for the incident. According to police, there was no evidence of alcohol or drug use at the scene by the operator of the vehicle.
The Medical Examiner's office was notified and an autopsy will be conducted.
There was no evidence of foul play found at the scene or on the body.
