Town Meeting Reps line up to vote on $14 million police-fire renovations during Saturday's meeting. (Howard Weiss-Tisman/Reformer)
BRATTLEBORO -- Town Meeting Representatives, during a lengthy Saturday meeting, voted to support a $14 million renovation project for the town's police and two fire stations while overwhelmingly declining a new 1 percent local option tax to help cover the cost.

The final tally on the police-fire renovations was 99-34. Brattleboro officials have been working toward the proposed renovations to the police and fire facilities for more than 20 years.

When it came to the 1 percent option tax, an official count was not taken because the voice vote was so one-sided.

Town officials said the tax could cover between 60 and 70 percent of the payments on the 20-year bond, which ultimately will cost about $20 million in interest and principal.

Saturday's meeting began at 8:30 a.m. at Academy School.

We'll have full coverage and reaction in Monday's Reformer.
