BRATTLEBORO -- For a third year, a promotion which aims to offer new and returning Brattleboro Reformer subscribers the chance to help a local family in hunger this holiday season, has once again returned.

Through Jan. 15, Feed Your Mind, Feed A Family will provide families in need with food through a pre-existing Hannaford program distributed through Project Feed the Thousands. For every subscription sold, a meal donation will be made to one of the following local programs: Brattleboro Area Drop In Center; Deerfield Valley Food Pantry; Our Place Drop In Center in Bellows Falls; Townshend Community Food Shelf; Chester-Andover Family Center; The Hinsdale Food Shelf; and Springfield Family Center.

"It’s my turn to try to help the people that live and work in our markets," Warren Dews, vice-president of circulation at New England Newspapers, said. While growing up, Dews was forced to rely on food aid programs. "I’ve decided to give our future and current customers the chance to help their neighbors."

According to the Vermont Campaign to End Childhood Hunger, 1 in 6 Vermont children - 23,000 - are hungry or at risk. Last year, through this program, more than 1,000 families in New England Newspapers’ markets were assisted.

The contents of the this year’s meal box, provided by Hannaford, includes: a 26-ounce jar of garlic and onion pasta sauce; a Hannaford canned chicken breast; a container of cut green beans; a box of Tasteeos cereal; regular instant oatmeal; elbows macaroni; macaroni and cheese; long grain white rice; and chicken noodle soup.

Dews said that similar promotions will also run in the three other Vermont markets covered by New England Newspapers. The promotion is good for every EZ Pay and Annual Pay subscription sold through Jan. 15. Existing customers could switch to EZ Pay or buy a year in advance, and they would still be contributing toward the program. E-editions are also included in the program.
