Westminster man cited with second DUI,
12 other offenses

BELLOWS FALLS -- A Westminster man was cited for his second DUI offense and 12 counts of violating conditions of release following a motor vehicle stop Wednesday, March 20

Joshua R. Stratton, of Westminster, was pulled over on Laurel Avenue by officers of the Bellows Falls Police Department at 8:13 p.m.

Stratton was ordered held on $5,000 cash or surety to run consecutive with the $50,000 cash or surety bond he was currently out on.

He was held at the Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield. He was to appear in Windham Superior Court: Criminal Division to answer to the charges.

Bellows Falls

-- On Monday, March 18, the Bellows Falls Police Department recovered property stolen in a burglary in the village on Sunday, March 10.

The property was recovered from a residence on Rockingham Street. The investigation is continuing and charges are expected.

Brattleboro

-- According to police, Kimberly Wood, 41, of Brattleboro, passed a bad check at Scissor Masters on Elliott Street on Friday, Oct. 26.

Wood was cited on Tuesday, March 19, for passing a bad check and for theft of services.

Dummerston

-- At 1:34 a.m. on Tuesday, March 19, troopers with the Vermont State Police responded to a spot along Route 5 on a report of a tractor-trailer being stuck in the middle of the road.

The troopers discovered an ABF Freight tractor-trailer stuck in the northbound lane between Middle and Carpenter roads. The operator of the tractor-trailer had already installed tire chains on the tractor but was unable to make any forward progress. The tractor was pulling two trailers and the operator was unable to back down the road due to the snow on the roadway.

Troopers had to shut down one lane for approximately an hour and a half until members of the Vermont Agency of Transportation were able to plow and treat the roadway.

Marlboro

-- A resident of Marlboro has reported the theft of two rifles from his home on Ames Hill Road.

According to police reports, the homeowner discovered the firearms were missing on Monday, March 18, but waited until Thursday, March 21, to make the report.

The incident is under investigation. Anyone with relevant information is asked to contact Senior Trooper Kurt Wagenbach at the Vermont State Police Brattleboro Barracks at 802-254-2382.

Rockingham

-- Vermont State Police responded to a single-vehicle crash in the southbound lane of Interstate 91, near mile-marker 33.8, at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19.

Taj Muhammad, 38, of Chester, was the operator and the only occupant of the vehicle. He was uninjured in the crash.

It was determined that the crash was the a result of Muhammad driving too fast for conditions.

The vehicle was towed back onto the roadway and Muhammad was able to drive away from the scene.

-- Christopher Nichols, 25, of Southbridge, Mass., was cited for driving under the influence of alcohol on Wednesday, March 20.

Vermont State Police responded to a disturbance at 5 Town Road in Rockingham at approximately 10:21 p.m. Troopers arrived and found several people outside the residence, attempting to make contact with the homeowner. It was determined that there was a dispute about a debt owed by one of the people involved.

Nichols was then cited for DUI and processed at the police barracks, where he was later released. He is scheduled to appear in court at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, April 9, to answer to the charge.

A second person had been drinking, taken into protective custody and was later released to a friend.

No other charges resulted from the incident and the parties dispersed.

The police departments of Springfield and Chester also responded and assisted at the scene.

Westminster

-- Vermont State Police responded to a report of a vehicle that hit the median of Interstate 91 at mile-marker 24 at 1:34 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19.

Karen Omartian, 66, of St. Albans, was traveling north when she lost control of the vehicle she was driving and crashed into the median. She was uninjured and the vehicle sustained minor front bumper damage.
