HINSDALE, N.H. -- With acres of outfield and no fence, the baseball field at Hinsdale High School is a hitter’s paradise.
And on a gorgeous Wednesday afternoon, the Monadnock Huskies took advantage.
"The Green Machine" racked up 18 hits, including six for extra bases, and pounded the host Pacers 24-0 in a varsity baseball game that was stopped after five innings.
The visitors belted three inside-the-park homers, with two coming from John Rowan and the other off the bat of Ben Mallet. Will Kitterman and Dan Whipple each tripled, and super sub Dan Owens added an RBI double.
But it may have been the poor defense that had Hinsdale skipper Brad Venice frustrated. The Pacers committed seven errors, which helped the Huskies bat around twice on the day.
The bright spot for the hosts was shortstop Richie Webster, who had five assists and one of Hinsdale’s two hits. Matt Boggio had the other.
Monadnock starter River Fish (6 K’s, 3 BB, 2 hits) went four innings for the victory. Reliever Ryan Riley struck out the side in the fifth, as members of the victorious Hinsdale softball team cheered on their Pacers.
The visitors stole a 4-0 advantage in the top of the first, thanks to a three-run shot from Mallet. Kitterman and Tyler Coppo started off the game with back-to-back singles and then Mallet launched one to center that outfielder PJ LaBarre had to chase toward Route 119. A ground out by Riley would score the team’s fourth run, following a couple of miscues by the hosts.
Things didn’t get any easier for Hinsdale starter Hunter Brooks, who gave up a two-run bomb to Rowan in the second and another in the third. Whipple and Kitterman contributed with triples as the Huskies built a 13-0 lead.
Reliever Ben Kilelee got the only batter he faced in the third and then retired the side in the fourth, but couldn’t buy an out in the fifth.
The first eight Monadnock batters reached, on four singles, a walk, a hit batsman, and a pair of errors. With his team down 18-0 and the home fans getting restless, Venice handed the ball over to Boggio.
The freshman gave up four RBI singles and watched two others score on miscues, but was able to induce four fly-outs to put an end to the marathon inning -- Monadnock sent 17 batters to the plate in that span.
Hinsdale hurlers Brooks, Kilelee and Boggio combined for two strikeouts, six free passes and an 18-hitter. Alex Passino caught two fly balls in right for the hosts, to share gold glove honors with Webster.
Rowan had three hits and five RBIs to lead the winners offensively. Kitterman also had three hits, while Coppo, Mallet, Whipple and Owens finished with two apiece.
