MONTPELIER, VT. >> Sen. Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign and the charges that Jody Herring shot to death three relatives in Berlin and social worker Lara Sobel in Barre placed first and second in the annual Associated Press ranking of the top 10 stories in Vermont.
Journalists at AP member newspapers and broadcasters gave third and fourth place to the arrest on sex charges of state Sen. Norm McAllister and Gov. Peter Shumlin's decision not to seek a fourth two-year term in 2016.
Others on the list included a new law urging schools to merge, the sale of IBM's Vermont facilities and the state's continuing struggle with opiate addiction. Other tops top stories were the controversy dogging Vermont Gas' pipeline expansion, the push for marijuana legalization, the effort to clean up the state's waterways and Vermont Health Connect's continuing troubles.
