WHITINGHAM >> Twin Valley varsity girls basketball coach Buddy Hayford was presented a plaque and was joined by 20 of his former players to celebrate his 400 career victories on Friday evening.
"Very honored and surprised," said Hayford of the event.
Hayford joined a list of Vermont coaches to win 400 or more games that also includes Dan Gandin (U-32 boys), Stretch Gilliam (Green Mountain boys), Jean Robinson (Essex girls), Sheila Burleigh (South Burlington girls), David Fredrickson (MAU boys), Mona Garone (Oxbow girls), Milton Hard (Burlington), Ken Fairchild (St. Albans boys), Layne Higgs (St. Johnsbury boys), Jim Leamy (Rutland boys), Don Maley (South Burlington) and Fran Pinard (Spaulding boys).
On that special night in Whitingham, Hayford's team defeated visiting Leland & Gray, 45-42.
Caroline Tietz pumped in a game-high 22 points for the Rebels. Kirra Courchesne (14 points), Sammy Morse (12) and Tayler Courchesne (10) paced Twin Valley. Kirra Courchesne also grabbed eight rebounds, while Tayler Courchesne added six boards and five steals.
The Rebels (5-6) out rebounded the Wildcats 29-28. The hosts took a 24-16 lead to the break, but were outscored 21-12 in the third quarter.
