BELLOWS FALLS — It's not every day that small towns break records, but one local grill could be on it's way to the Guinness Book of World Records.

From 8:48 a.m. on Friday, August 5, to 9:48 p.m. on Saturday, August 6 (37 hours), two staff members grilled without ceasing. Owner of Shona Grill, Kim Bovill, said since last year it has been her goal to beat the 34.35-hour record for longest running team barbecue. That record was set by grillers Drew Battistelli and Susie Bulloch from New York on August 14 and 15, 2015. Unfortunately, last year, when Bovill's team attempted to beat the record, there was a malfunction in some of the video documentation and they were not included in the book, but this year Bovill is feeling confident despite some anxiety and lack of sleep.

"I was very humbled by the experience of so many community people who came out to support the barbecue," said Bovill. "It took 70 witnesses to observe and document the barbecue and I feel it was a very successful event."

This challenge involved preparing 645 burgers at 105 pounds total, 300 hundred hotdogs, 50 pounds of sausages, two porkloins, briskets, corn and other grilled vegetables. There was a set of two witnesses on the scene throughout the entire cooking event; they were required to document every time Bovill and her cook, Nick Moll, placed something on the grill or took it off, as well as the item type and its weight. There needs to be at least five different items on the grill at all times.

"I say the heat has been the most challenging aspect, and last year was much easier because you had no expectations; the second time you have a little more expectations and anxiety," said Bovill. "You just expect it to go really, really well and you don't want to run out of anything or something to go wrong with the video."

One cook is required to be on the grill at all times and each is allowed a five minute break once an hour, or they can refrain from a break and add up their break time and take a longer break later. However, their break time is tacked on at the end.

"They've been really consistent the whole time, so I give them credit," said Tara Wilder of Westminster who was one of the witnesses to the competition.

Wilder said she enjoyed watching the challenge and has met a lot of people through the process.

"(On Friday night) a couple from Windsor saw them on the news and drove down," said Sirena Relihan of Westminster who was a witness on Friday night.

Bovill and Moll survived the challenge without sleep or fail to their knowledge and Bovill said that her team got a second wind during the last stretch of the challenge that really carried them through.

"When the band Intercept came on at 6 p.m. it made the last few hours full of energy and put it into high gear and gave us that final surge of energy that we all very much needed to finish with success," said Bovill. "The fireworks were the icing on the cake."

The challenge coincided beautifully with Rockingham Old Home Days, a three-day festival held the first weekend every August, a tradition dating to 1976.

According to Bovill, the next step is to turn in the results to the Guinness "people" located in the United Kingdom. She said it takes about six weeks to hear back.
