LAKE PLACID, N.Y. >> State forest rangers plan to return Friday morning to the scene of an Adirondack Mountain wildfire that was contained after nearly eight hours.

A dispatch from Lake Placid fire officials said the blaze spread to about three acres near Nye Mountain and was 98 percent contained by Thursday evening. Several fire departments and state forest rangers worked to contain the wildfire, which erupted close to the Northville-Placid Trail.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

A state report last month said 86 percent of New York was either abnormally dry or in some level of drought. The Climate Prediction Center expects the drought to last through November.
