You know, sometimes the folks you count on the most just let you down! The very folks you have faith in, the people you think you can trust, the folks you count on to make the correct decision every time Š sometimes they just crush your spirits. But this is America and you’ve got options, but unfortunately Americans usually choose not to engage, yet that is the one thing America seems to be good at Š engaging.
To avoid a government shutdown President Obama signed into law bill HR933, which stopped $85 billion worth of automatic cuts that would have taken effect. YAY, President Obama! But that bill also included the Agricultural Appropriations Bill, more importantly Section 735 better known as the Monsanto Protection Act - spirit crushing to say the least. Boooo, President Obama!
If you’re not aware of what Monsanto does let me tell you that they are pure evil. The Ag Bill basically promotes that Monsanto keep doing what they do, genetically modifying our food. If you don’t think this is serious, you’re wrong. If you think that Monsanto isn’t poisoning our food stream, you’re wrong. I am one of the chairs the Windham County Relay for Life; our sole mission is to eradicate cancer. Monsanto is doing its level best to make sure that never happens.
But like most Americans, we’re busy people and we trust elected officials to do right by us. Well, this time that wasn’t done. President Obama may have done plenty right but he’s been far from perfect and the signing of this bill is a black mark on his record.
Still not sure what I’m talking about? Let me break it down for you. The signing of HR933 that avoided a government shutdown (which I’m no longer convinced would be a bad thing), included section 735 which effectively bars any court from stopping the production of genetically modified foods regardless of any health concerns that pop up. What does that mean? Layman explanation, if they started dipping your pork chops in gasoline and telling you it was healthy the courts couldn’t stop them. This bill was signed into law under the guise of preventing a government shutdown. Many members of Congress weren’t even aware that section 735 was even in the bill. After all, why would something like that be in a bill to prevent a government shutdown? It’s like going to a football game and deep into the fourth quarter they start playing baseball.
So while the nation was fixated on gay marriage and the oral arguments being given on California’s Prop 8, President Obama was busy letting us down. This is the same man whose wife has a victory garden at the White House, the First Lady travels the land promoting a healthy life style and the benefits of good food. So needless to say, I’m crushed that he didn’t pull it before signing the bill. It sets a horrible precedent that big business can basically bend our government to conform to their boardrooms. Frankly, I’ve had it! I’m so sick and tired of last minute backroom deals that will effectively allow gasoline marinated pork chops to be sold as healthy because you can throw 735 into something it has no business being in.
But as I stated at the beginning, sometimes people let you down, sometimes they leave you bewildered. But we have options, three to be exact (at least here in Vermont) and here they are Senator Bernie Sanders 202-224-5141 or www.sanders.senate.gov, Pat Leahy (202) 224-4242 or www.leahy.senate.gov and finally Peter Welch 802-652-2450 or www.welch.house.gov. All you have to do is write or call, let them know you’re dead set against this bill (or at least that sections, again that’s 735). It will probably take all of two minutes, if you go to their websites and follow links to the contact portion it will probably take less. Oh, there’s another option for your dollars -- spend them locally on organic food, eat seasonally and be mindful of what you’re buying and where it came from. Also, never lose that ability to ask, What the hell is up with that?
