BELLOWS FALLS >> Ila Mitchell has been named 2016 Senior of the Year by the Bellows Falls Senior Center. Mitchell has been volunteering since 2013 and enjoys golfing in her free time. The Senior Center describes her as "an amazing volunteer and a dear friend to the community."
On Friday, Sept. 9, the senior center will host its first book club meeting courtesy of the Rockingham Free Library. The meeting starts at 9 a.m. at the center.
The center will be hold a flu shot clinic on Thursday, Sept. 29, from 1 to 3 p.m. The clinic is sponsored by the Visiting Nurse and Hospice of Vermont and New Hampshire. No appointment is necessary, first come first served basis. The vaccination is free for individuals with Medicare Part B insurance; please be sure to bring your card. Fee for all others is $25 per vaccination.
September birthdays will be celebrated on Tuesday, Sept. 13, and come to the Senior Center for its monthly ice cream social after lunch on Wednesday, Sept. 21.
Foot care clinics will be held on Oct. 6 and 14 by appointment only.
The center will be closed on Oct. 12 in observance of Columbus Day.
The center serves a congregate meal Monday through Friday starting at 11:30 a.m. Meal includes roll and butter, entrée, vegetable, starch, dessert and beverage. $5 for those under 60, and a suggested donation of $3.50 for those 60 and older. No reservations necessary, first come first served.
AARP will be hosting a driver safety course here on Oct. 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cars have changed, so have traffic rules, driving conditions, and the roads we travel every day. Some drivers have never looked back since they got their first driver's licenses, but even the most experienced drivers can benefit from brushing up on their driving skills. By taking a driver safety course they will learn the current rules of the road, defensive driving techniques, and how to operate their vehicles more safely in today's increasingly challenging driving environment.
