BRATTLEBORO >> Jane Diefenbach, of Washington D.C., has spent this summer and last summer house sitting on Cherry Street in Brattleboro. At least twice a day she walks the old farm road that runs between Organ Street and Birge Street. This path offers a short cut that avoids traffic and sidewalks. This trail is much appreciated by those who have discovered it. Many bring a bag and pick up random trash on their walks.
Sadly, a short distance off the trail but clearly visible, a significant dumping spot has been established over the years. Many have wished it away, but until now, no one has attempted to clean it up. Jane organized a group of neighbors who attacked the mess on Sunday, Aug. 28. She called the Department of Public Works and arranged to have a truck pick up the bagged trash, household items, and junk that the crew brought to the bottom of the trail early on Monday morning.
In addition to Jane the members of the clean up crew were Mary Lea, Judy Zemel, Janice and Jerry Stockman. The work, which at first looked impossible, was completed in an hour and a half. Everyone was very pleased with the results. Sometimes it takes a new person's eyes and energy to make something happen.
