DUMMERSTON >> With apple picking season just starting to roll, Scott Farm on Kipling Road is offering a number of activities, workshops and other events in October.
On Sunday, at 10 a.m., join orchardist Zeke Goodband to learn about the history of the heirloom fruits in a discussion about orchard ecology and how grafting was used to create the orchard. Participants will also scout for pests and discuss how they are managed. Orchard-related items will be available for purchase in the farm market. No charge.
Also on Sunday, from 10 a.m. to noon, Cider Maker Jason MacArthur, the co-owner of Whetstone Cider Works, will discuss pple varieties, techniques, equipment, yeast strains, fermentation, bottling and racking for producing hard cider at home. Basic cider equipment and fresh cider for fermenting will also be available for sale. Register at 802-254-6868. The cost is $40.
On Sunday, Oct. 9, at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m., as part of Scott Farm's 14th Annual Heirloom Apple Day, there will be tastings of some of the farm's 120 varieties as Goodband talks about the enlightening history of these unique fruits. Heirloom apples and cider will be available for sale.
Sample old world and early American heirloom varieties such as Esopus Spitzenburg, a favorite of Thomas Jefferson, grown at Monticello; Reine des Reinette, a French apple from the 1700s, considered the best hard cider apple in Normandy; and Cox's Orange Pippin, an English favorite, awarded the highest honors by the Royal Horticultural Society — just to name a few.
Visitors can also pick their own apples in the orchard or select them from apple bins in the farm market, along with heirloom cider, freshly baked apple pies, fruit jams and jellies, and more.
In addition to the apple tasting, Whetstone Ciderworks, of Marlboro, will be on hand to offer samples of their award- winning hard ciders blended primarily with apples from Scott Farm Orchard.
Rigani Wood-Fired Pizza of Brattleboro will be on premises with their portable wood-fired oven, cooking up and vending artisanal pizzas featuring local ingredients.
On Saturday, Oct. 15, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Scott Farm will host an heirloom apple pie workshop with Pastry Chef Laurel Roberts Johnson. Tackle "pie dough anxiety" with the Queen of Tarts. Make flaky pie dough and bake an apple pie with our heirlooms. Take home your pie, dough, and a tote of heirloom baking apples. Register at 802-254-6868. The cost is $50.
On Sunday, Oct. 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Master Brewer Thomas Coleman, the former owner of Black River Brewing Company, will present and introduction to brewing beer with wet hops. The workshop includes a visit a hop yard and home brewing techniques for making extract and partial mash beer and evaluating craft brew styles. Register at 802-254-6868. The cost is $50.
On Saturday, Oct. 29, at 6 p.m., Scott Farm's and Vermont Fresh Network host a On-the-Farm Heirloom Apple Harvest Dinner, a five-course harvest dinner showcasing heirloom apples and cider and other local foods prepared by Chef Tristan Toleno of Entera Catering. On Nov. 12, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Pastry Chef Laurel Roberts Johnson, the owner of The Queen of Tarts, will host a Holiday Harvest Pie Workshop, to guide you in making the quintessential holiday pie, with crisp apples, sweet pears and tart quince poached in cider and honey, all tucked into a flaky pastry crust.
