Following Tropical Storm Irene in 2011, Adams Brook in Newfane was repaired with large rocks and stones. The Windham Regional Commission recently received a grant to help pay to remove the rocks and restore the stream bed.

NEWFANE >> The Windham Regional Commission is pleased to announce that it has secured funding from the state of Vermont, Agency of Natural Resources, Department of Environmental Conservation, Ecosystem Restoration Program, for developing final designs for restoration of 200 feet of Adams Brook in Newfane.

Following the Tropical Storm Irene flood of 2011, bed armor treatments were applied to the brook. These treatments resulted in significant impacts to aquatic resources which continue to occur today. The depth, sizing and gradation of bed armor were not appropriate and the transition to and from natural streambed elevation was too large and too abrupt.

"In this case, the stream eroded the embankment that was holding up Adams Hill Road and the whole road washed out," said John Bennett, senior planner at Windham Regional Commission. "When repairs were made, they put lots of large rocks in the stream bottom so it wouldn't cut down the bank anymore, similar to what was done along Route 9 for the Whetstone Brook. But in this case, they used four or five feet of rock and now the stream is running underneath the rock. Some people are calling it a hiking trail for fish."

The portion of the brook that was "armored" is just upstream from its confluence with the Rock River.


A prior project assessed the stream geomorphology of approximately 1,500 feet of Adams Brook and developed a conceptual restoration plan for the 200, plus or minor, feet of bed armor. This project will finalize 100-percent design plans and cost estimates for the implementation stage of the project. The final construction stage project will include removal of excess bed armor, creation of low flow and bank-full stream channels, stabilization of eroding banks, and restoration of aquatic organism passage and fish habitat.
