Together with Prevent Child Abuse Vermont, the Springfield Area Parent Child Center presents an informational workshop on Shaken Baby Syndrome, Monday May 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Springfield Area Parent Child Center in North Springfield.

In a relaxed and fun environment, parents, grandparents, childcare providers, human service providers and the general public will learn the causes and outcomes of Shaken Baby Syndrome, revisit why babies cry and how to console them, and 'identify stressors and safe ways to manage frustrations.' The above topics will be explored through jello brain molds, dolls, a powerpoint and a powerful video.

Shaken Baby Syndrome, SBS, is a term used to explain acute intracranial trauma in infants, where there is an absence of an external head trauma. 'These injuries are virtually never seen unless violent whiplash shaking of the head has occurred.' SBS is not caused by: tossing a child in the air, bouncing a baby on your knee, using an infant swing, falling, roughhousing, or jogging with a baby.

Prevent Child Abuse Vermont reminds us that 'comforting a crying baby isn't always easy. Always remember to never shake a baby.' To register
