God in the Whitehouse

Randall Balmer, professor of religious history at Barnard College, Columbia University, and visiting professor at Yale Divinity School and Dartmouth, will be at Misty Valley Books on the Green in Chester on Sunday, May 11 at 4 p.m. to discuss his book, God in the White House: A History. Major American Poet at Brooks Memorial

Alicia Ostriker, a major American poet and critic, will read at Brooks Memorial Library in Brattleboro, Thursday, May 15, at 7 p.m.

Ostricker has published eleven volumes of poetry, including The Volcano Sequence and No Heaven. Her poetry has appeared in The New Yorker, American Poetry Review, The Atlantic, Paris Review, Yale Review, Ontario Review, The Nation, and many other journals and anthologies.

Elder Buddhist Monk to Teach in Area

"Transforming the Heart: The Buddhist Way to Joy and Courage" with Jampa Tegchok, Rinpoche, will take place on Friday, May 9, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Sanctuary in Westminster West. Other events will take place on Saturday, May 10, from 7 to 9 p.m., and Sunday, May 11 from 10 a.m. to noon at Thosum Gephelling Institute in Williamsville.

Rinpoche returns this year to speak from his about transforming our hearts. This talk is a practical and inspiring teaching for developing our ability to be happy and benefit others. He is a simple and warm monk with a very great heart beloved by all who have had the opportunity to meet him and listen to his talks on Buddhism.

Spaghetti Supper

The Woman's Fellowship of The First Congregational Church of Westminster will be holding a Spaghetti Supper Saturday, May 10.

Dinner will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door $6 for adults and $3 for children ages 5 - 8. Spring Wildflower Walk

In this walk participants will locate and identify six of the spring ephemeral wildflowers that are found in the Windmill Hill Pinnacle Association's Martin Sanctuary on Bemis Hill Road. Factors such as forest community type, canopy cover, and microtopography which affect the presence of these species will also be discussed. The walk is led by Paul "Hop" Hopkins, who did his graduate school thesis field work about spring ephemerals in this same area and who currently teaches science at The Grammar School in Putney. This program

is part of the "Exploring Rockingham: Nature Out Our Backdoor" series, which is made possible by a grant from TransCanada. Free to the public.

It all takes place at Martin Sanctuary trail head on Bemis Hill Road, outside of Saxtons River, Saturday May 10, from 9 to 11 a.m.

Walpole Library

Plant Sale

The Friends of the Walpole Town Library plant sale, scheduled each year on the Saturday before Mother's Day, will be held on the lawn of the Bridge Memorial Library, Main Street, Walpole on Saturday, May 10, beginning at 9 a.m. This popular event will go on until everything is sold, usually well before Noon.

Proceeds from the sale benefit both the Bridge Memorial Library and the North Walpole branch, located in North Walpole in the Fire Department building on School Street.

The sale features healthy perennials, small shrubs, groundcovers, and other plants donated by area residents. Among the favorites expected this year are hybrid daylilies, shasta daisies, asters, roses, ladies mantle, pachysandra, ferns, dahlias, mint, chives and many others.

Soon to be Wed

Mr. Stephen L. Moore of Bellows Falls announces the engagement of his daughter Allyson Moore to Ian Eule, son of Peter and Barbara Eule of Clinton, CT. Allyson is also the daughter of the late Lynda

Marine Moore.

The couple will be marrying in Manchester, in September 2008.

Birth Announced

Maya Rose Villemaire was born April 9, 2008, at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital to Herb and Rianna Villemaire of Charlestown. Maya weighed 8 pounds, 3 ounces and was 213/4 inches

long.

She joins a sister, Stacey (Villemaire) Alexander of Londonderry. Her grandmothers are Bebe Schroeder and Alice Villemaire, both of Springfield.
