BRATTLEBORO -- The Valley Lions Club of Newfane held an event on June 21 at the Brattleboro Country Club to honor this year’s scholarship recipients and their parents.

This year’s winners include:

Samantha Russ of Townshend. Samantha will attend Roger Williams University and major in Civil Engineering. She has also received awards for being a National Honor Society member, and varsity letters in soccer and basketball. Last summer she attended the Summer Transportation Institute at Merrimack College for a month to further her interest in civil engineering. She has been a mentor to a child at the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, worked at the town’s Friends of the Library book sale and participated annually at the Green-up Day.

Krista Gay of Athens. She will attend John Brown University and major in Biology. Krista has been top of her class in numerous classes, earning her the most credit and AP classes ever by any student. She is also a National Honor Society member and volunteer in the summer at Camp Good News. She went on a missionary to the Philippines working in the health clinics in the poorest of areas. She was also a peer tutor for the science department helping students in biology and math.

Olivia Capponcelli of Brookline. Olivia will attend Keene (N.H.) State College and major in Nursing BSN. She is also a National Honor Society member earning her high honors. She has been competing in

gymnastics for 10 years. She was on the varsity soccer team and has completed many community service activities. One activity that really left an impact on her was when she helped with the rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina. She went to New Orleans to help rip down and rebuild houses. She says it felt great to have everyone be so thankful.

The Valley Lions Club is proud of each of their scholarship winners and wish them good luck in the future.
