The Grammar School graduates 16

PUTNEY -- The Grammar School graduated 16 eighth graders on June 15.

Jamie Cooper-Ellis of Putney is going to Woodward U in California; Rory Cuerdon, Isabel Rodriguez, and Lucie Foster of Putney and Bellows Falls, along with Jennifer Flint of Springfield and Rudi Gohl of Walpole, N.H. will attend The Putney School; Stefan Grallert of Claremont, N.H. is headed to Stevens High School; Henry Hamilton of Newport, N.H. will go to Kimball Union Academy; Hannah Oxholm of Saxtons River is going to West Nottingham Academy in Maryland; Frances Cornick of Brattleboro and Westminster will be at BUHS; Devin Hogan of East Alstead, N.H., Evan Ray of Brookline, and Leyeyo Kipamba of Townshend and Longido, Tanzania, will attend Vermont Academy; Mitike Lyons of Dummerston, Aly Silbey of Walpole, N.H., and Ona Hauert of Chesterfield, N.H., are going to Northfield Mount Hermon School.

Vermont Grocers award scholarship

TOWNSHEND -- Brookline resident Olivia Capponcelli, who works at the Newfane Market and recently graduated from Leland & Gray Union High School, received an award from the Vermont Grocers’ Association. She will be attending Keene, N.H., State College in the fall.

AAUW awards four scholarships

BRATTLEBORO -- The Brattleboro branch of AAUW awarded four college scholarships of $1,000 each to one graduate of Brattleboro Union High School and three 2012 graduates of Leland & Gray Union High School.

Megan Collins of Brattleboro was awarded the Jane Baker Memorial Scholarship to help her attend West Virginia University. Collins was active in her class council through four years at BUHS, played field hockey and coached field hockey for the Brattleboro Recreation Department. She did volunteer work for the Vermont Army National Guard and was a Big Sister.

Krista Gray of Athens plans to attend John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, from Leland & Gray. She has obtained many AP college credits from high sc hool by studying online. She was class president, a member of the National Honor Society and a varsity soccer player. A month in the Philippines in a poverty area convinced her to study microbiology in college to help prevent diseases.

Phoebe Gunther-Mohr of East Dover will be attending Bard College, Annandale on Hudson, in New York. During her years at Leland & Gray she was chosen for the Journey East program to go to China. She was also captain of the stage crew for four years, played varsity soccer, and participated in the National Honor Society.

Samantha Russ of Townshend also attended Leland & Gray and is determined to be a civil engineer. She has been accepted at Roger Williams Universiy in Bristol, R.I.

She attended the Governor’s Institute for Engineering at UVM and a summer Transportation Institute at Merrimack College plus taking an online statistics class, plus working, playing soccer and instrumental music, and was a member of the National Honor Society.

AAUW is a national organization devoted to advancing equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research.

Mount Hermon Honor Roll

MOUNT HERMON, Mass. -- The following local Vermont students have been named to the academic honor roll for the spring term at Northfield Mount Hermon School:

Dummerston -- Matthew Dews, Class of 2013, received high honors and the Elliott Computing Prize; Emma Flynt, Class of 2012, received honors.

Guilford -- Katherine Schroeder, Class of 2015, received honors and the Joseph Allen Studio Arts Prize; Isaac Karlan-Mason, Class of 2015, received high honors; Benjamin Knapp, Class of 2014, received high honors; Hannah Zorian, Class of 2013, received honors.

Putney -- Louise Weed, Class of 2014, received high honors and the Henry R. Huntting Literary Prize; Miles Schelling, Class of 2012, received high honors; Henry Silbaugh, Class of 2013, received honors.

South Newfane -- Eleanor Lasch, Class of 2012, received honors.

Vernon -- Kirsten Breau, Class of 2013, received honors; Riley Farabaugh, Class of 2013, received honors; BreAnna Bashaw, Class of 2012, received high honors.

Brattleboro Chamber awards scholarships

BRATTLEBORO -- The Brattleboro Area Chamber of Commerce recently announced the 2012 recipients of its "Skills for Success" scholarships. Five area high school graduates were each awarded $500 by the business organization to help further their post-secondary school education.

This year’s awardees are Raven Solomon of Brattleboro, Windham Regional Career Center, who will attend Vermont Technical College to study Civil & Environmental Engineering Technology; Erik Starr of Windham, Kindle Farm School, who is going to Lyndon State College to study music studio production; Lindsay Johnson of Vernon, Brattleboro Union High School, who will attend the Pennsylvania College of Technology to study nursing; Heather Scherlin of Hinsdale, N.H., Hinsdale High School, who will attend the Keene Beauty Academy to study hairstyling; and Samuel Bourne of Brookline, Leland & Gray Union High School, who is going to State University of New York, Cobleskill, to study diesel mechanics.
