BRATTLEBORO -- Brattleboro American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 5 has announced that there are six different scholarships applications that are available to students from the area. These are from the National and State organizations.

The first is The National American Legion Auxiliary Spirit of Youth Scholarship For Junior Members. Five scholarships in the amount of $5,000 will be awarded for the 2012-2013 Auxiliary year. One scholarship will be awarded in each division of the American Legion Auxiliary. All are gift scholarships and are not loans. Candidates for this award shall be or have been Junior members of the American Legion Auxiliary; said member to have held Junior membership in the American Legion Auxiliary for the past three years and must hold a membership card for the current (2013) year. Applicant must continue her membership in the American Legion Auxiliary during the four-year-scholarship period.

The next scholarship is The National American Legion Auxiliary Children of Warriors National President’s Scholarship. Fifteen scholarships will be awarded in each division of the American Legion Auxiliary; one for $3,500, one for $3,000, and one for $2,500. All are gift scholarships and not loans. Candidates for this award must be daughters, stepdaughters, sons, stepsons, grandsons, step-grandsons, granddaughters, step-granddaughters, great-granddaughters, step-great-granddaughters, great grandsons, step-great-grandsons of veterans who served in the Armed Forces during eligibility dates for membership in the American Legion.

For the non-traditional student, there is The National American Legion Auxiliary Scholarship For Non-Traditional Students. The applicant must be a member of the American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, or Sons of the American Legion and having paid dues for the two preceding years and for the calendar year in which the application is made. The applicant must be a non-traditional student returning to the classroom after some period of time in which his/her formal education was interrupted and/or who is just beginning his/her education at a later point in life.

The three above scholarships are due to President Judy Flynn by March 1, 2013.

The Department of Vermont American Legion Auxiliary also offers a Non-Traditional Scholarship Award in the amount of $1,000. The applicant must be a member of the American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, or Sons of the American Legion. They need to have paid their dues for the two previous years and the present year in which they are applying.

One award for $1,000 will be also given by the Department of Vermont American Legion Auxiliary to a high school senior who is the daughter, stepdaughter, son, stepson, grandsons, step-grandsons, granddaughters, step-granddaughters, great granddaughters, step-great-granddaughters, great grandsons, and step-great-grandsons of veterans who served in the Armed Forces during eligibility dates for membership in the American Legion.

The Past Presidents’ Parley of the Department of Vermont, made up of Past Presidents from every level, offers a scholarship of $500 to those entering the nursing field, either LPN or RN. The applicant must be a son, daughter, grandson, granddaughter, great grandson, or great granddaughter of a veteran. This and the two previous applications must be in the hands of the Auxiliary President Judy Flynn by April 1, 2013.
