BRATTLEBORO -- The Brattleboro Rotary Club awarded $17,000 in scholarships to six local high school students who graduated in June 2013 and will be attending college this fall. The scholarships are funded by The Gateway Foundation, a tax-exempt affiliate of the Brattleboro Rotary Club.
This year’s recipients include: Taylor J. Coleman of Hinsdale, N.H., (attending Plymouth State University); Megan E. Fisk of Hinsdale (attending Keene State College); Marrina-Raine N. Gallant of Brattleboro (attending Pace University); Theresa M. Glabach of Dummerston (attending University of Vermont); and Kiara F. Wilhite of Townshend (attending University of Vermont), each of whom received $3,000; and Tilden M. Remerleitch of Guilford (attending University of Vermont) who received $2,000.
According to Scholarship Committee Chairman John Mabie, "We are happy to be able to offer these scholarships, and hope the assistance will help lead each student a step closer to his or her goals."
The Brattleboro Rotary Club established the Gateway Foundation in 1986 to create a fund to support scholarships awarded annually to local students pursuing college. The foundation, which is a nonprofit and tax-exempt organization, has awarded over $400,000 in scholarships to area students. It is funded by contributions Rotary Club and individual contributions.
Applications are accepted each spring from graduating seniors at the following high schools: Brattleboro Union, Hinsdale, Leland & Gray, and the Austine School.
Founded in 1950, the Brattleboro Rotary Club is an active community service club of about 90 members. It engages in community and human service projects locally and internationally. The club has weekly meetings at 12:15 p.m. on Thursdays. Summer-time meetings take place at the Brattleboro Country Club and fall, winter and spring meetings take place at the VFW on Black Mountain Road in North Brattleboro. The public is welcome to attend meetings by contacting a Rotary member.
