BRATTLEBORO -- Students enrolled in the Windham Regional Career Center’s dance program sold pies and wrapping paper and held a silent auction to help fund their recent participation at the National High School Dance Festival in Miami. They were joined by students from over 80 other high schools around the country and the world.

The venue provided these local dancers the chance to audition for summer dance programs, colleges and scholarship opportunities. These auditions resulted in a number of schools and programs expressing an interest in the students for future involvement, including the Nashville Ballet, the Philadelphia School for the Arts, Joffrey Summer Intensives, University of Texas in Austin, Point Park College and the Bates Dance Festival.

In addition to the auditions, students attended multiple dance classes daily and attended lectures on such topics as dance history, injury prevention, and careers in dance. Evenings were spent attending dance concerts that were performed by both professional dancers and companies as well as by students at the festival. This included one piece choreographed by Caitlin McCloskey-Meyer, a Brattleboro senior, in which she performed along with three other Career Center students, Sonya Marx of West Chesterfield, N.H., Rebekah Scott of Brattleboro, and Phoebe Green of Dummerston.

Caitlin’s piece was chosen for performance from hundreds of submissions of student work leading up to the festival.

Sonya enjoyed performing in this piece, sharing that "it was mostly students in the audience and they were a very supportive and appreciative crowd."

Career Center students attend their dance classes off site during the school day at the Brattleboro School of Dance on High Street in Brattleboro. Jenn Moyse, School of Dance owner, shared that "it was a highlight of the trip to see four of our dancers perform in front of a group of their peers from around the country. And then 15 minutes later, all four girls and our 15 other students were back in class learning from professors and professionals from esteemed universities and dance companies from around the world." Assisting Moyse on this trip was Rachel Hebert, a Brattleboro School of Dance instructor and alumnus of the Career Center’s dance program.

Arts and communications offerings at the Windham Regional Career Center include courses in dance, acting, directing, circus arts, and film making and digital editing.
