TOWNSHEND >> The Townshend Elementary School recently received its preliminary 2015/2016 student Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium results.
The entire school community was pleased with the efforts of the students and the outcomes of those efforts. In English Language Arts, the students demonstrated 75 percent proficiency and in Math, the students demonstrated 81 percent proficiency.
While the state averages have not yet been released, with last year's scores near the 50 percent proficiency mark, the Townshend community was excited with their student results.
"Last year we were 68 percent in ELA and 59 percent in Math," siad Townshend principal Deborah Leggott. "So increasing in both and over 20 percent in Math was very gratifying. We have been very focused on Common Core math instruction these last few years. We have invested in targeted professional development and our teachers have really increased their capacity to deliver high-quality math instruction. I think these results bear out that our investments were wise."
Third and fourth grade teacher, Bethany Barton said "We have really come together as a staff around making sure we have a minimum of 60 minutes of math instruction each day. We aren't required to teach a specific program or use a specific textbook. We are trusted to design appropriate instruction. That freedom and trust leads to collaboration amongst the staff and really engaging lessons."
