The pipa is an ancient lute-like instrument that frequently appears in new compositions influenced by ancient and cross-cultural art forms. Gao Hong joins Composer in Residence Lei Liang, a Chinese-American composer currently teaching at UC-San Diego, for performances and discussions scheduled through Aug. 2. Full Story

Endowed with a unique and powerful voice that ranges from youthfully sweet to gravelly world-weary, she's sung with a list of names so long it would be a mistake to list them all.
