LIBRARY CLOSING?: Once again, Brooks Memorial Library may need to close on Saturday, Aug. 18, due to CVPS/GMP work to replace an electrical pole. The company was unable to do the work on Aug. 11 as originally planned.
If it rains, the work will be rescheduled and the library will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. as scheduled on Aug. 18.
For an update, after 8 a.m. on Saturday, check the web page at www.brooks.lib.vt.us. There will be no phone service, if there is no power.
HOMESCHOOL MEETING: The Windham County Homeschool annual meeting will be held Tuesday, Aug. 28, at 5 p.m. in the Meeting Room at Brooks Memorial Library, 224 Main St., in Brattleboro.
Anyone at all interested in homeschooling is welcome. Bring energy, ideas and plans. Parents are encouraged to share information about programs, activities, etc. in the area.

PEACH SHORTCAKE SUPPER: The Evening Star Grange will be serving its annual Peach Shortcake Supper on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Grange Hall in Dummerston Center. The menu will include baked ham, au gratin potatoes, coleslaw, deviled eggs, baked beans, assorted vegetables and peach shortcake with homemade biscuits and real whipped cream. MUSHROOM WALK: Third-generation mushroom forager, Dick McCarrick, will lead a mushroom walk through a wooded area on Saturday, Aug. 25, from 10 a.m. to noon. This event is presented by The Nature Museum at Grafton and will take place at Grafton Ponds Outdoor Center at 783 Townshend Road in Grafton. McCarrick will teach participants about safe mushroom hunting techniques, show specimens of poisonous and nonpoisonous mushrooms, and explain mushroom morphology.

COMMUNITY BIKE RIDE: Join families, friends and neighbors for the final in a series of community bike rides held this summer. Riders will leave from the Putney Tavern Green at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 26. The Putney Coop has offered apres ride refreshments.
Several mapped rides of varying length and difficulty, 2.5 to 19 miles, will be available to choose from. Hybrid, cyclocross and mountain bikes are best suited for the mostly dirt road terrain. These are unsupported show-n-go rides. No leaders, and no sweep. Segments of these rides might be remote so prepare accordingly.

BAKED BEAN SUPPER: Vernon Union Church will hold a benefit Baked Bean Supper on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. On the menu will be homemade baked beans, hot dogs, coleslaw, potato salad, homemade brown bread and rolls, and dessert.
The cost is by donation and the proceeds will go toward a youth mission trip. All are welcome. The church is located at 2631 Fort Bridgman Road, Route 142, in Vernon.
MUSHROOM HUNT: Putney Mountain Association will hold a Mushroom Hunt in Vernon with Trudy Crites on Saturday, Aug. 25. A veteran mushroom hunter, Crites will lead a hunting walk beginning at 10 a.m. at Indian Point Park on Route 142.
Crites, a well-known Brattleboro artist and resident, has led mushroom walks for many years. To reach to the park, take Route 142 toward Vernon for 3.7 miles south from the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center. The park is on the left and parking is available. The rain date will be Sunday, Aug. 26, at 2 p.m.

CHICKEN BARBECUE: The First Congregational Church in Walpole will sponsor a chicken barbecue from 5 to 6 p.m. on the church lawn on Sunday, Aug. 19, before the last band concert of the season.
Donation for a half chicken for takeout will be $5 and dinners will be $10. Dinner includes half a chicken, potato salad, coleslaw, cranberry sauce, roll, and lemonade. To reserve tickets in advance, call 603-445-5637.
