WEST DOVER -- U.S. Cellular customers will soon be able to carry on their phone conversations at Mount Snow a little longer than in the past,
More bandwidth for the service is coming to the mountain, which will help its customers keep in touch when they're on the slopes, in the lodge, or at one of the mountain's restaurants.
"By locating the antennas, we'll be able to provide excellent service for the folks who visit," said KJK Principal Ken Kozyra. "Currently, we have facilities at the top of the hill, but the terrain is hilly, so there are certain elements at Mount Snow that don't have particularly good service."
KJK Wireless provides services for U.S. Cellular, which includes getting permits for cell sites.
On Nov. 5, Bob Gashlin, a representative of KJK Wireless, presented the Dover Selectboard with a proposal for installing telecommunications equipment that will include eight antennas on the Mount Snow base lodge, weighing approximately 30 pounds each, a 12-by-20-foot radio equipment shelter next to the lodge and a telephone service -- an underground conduit that connects to power and land-based telephone networks through lines underneath the parking lot.
The radio shelter will go alongside the main base lodge and will include transmitting equipment. It will be a prefabricated concrete structure with clapboards for siding and the outside will be painted green to mix in with the surroundings.
In the next few days, KJK is hoping to get its permit issued by the Dover Selectboard to begin work at the site. Kozyra hopes the proposed facility will be done by next year.
KJK has been working on the project since the spring of 2012.
The additional equipment will not expand the service area but will expand the volume of service, meaning phone-calls won't be lost as easily.
The U.S. Cellular customers in the lodges at Mount Snow would benefit from this project, as well as condominiums near the mountain.
Kozyra said KJK has an LTE/4G data plan for the "not-so-distant future" at this site and facility.
"As always, we're hoping to provide better coverage and service to U.S. Cellular customers in the future and now."
