BRATTLEBORO -- Charles Neville helped kick off the Sam’s Sunday Set & Shed mentor-protege concert series in the summer of 2011. The legendary saxophonist returns on Nov. 18 to perform with his sons, Tayln and Khalif, at 4 p.m., at the Elliot Street Cafe, 134 Elliot St.

Neville will be spotlighting his 10-year-old son Tayln on drums, with 16-year-old Khalif joining in on keyboards for a few songs. The supporting rhythm section during the one-hour set will consist of Eugene Uman (piano), Daniel Broad (bass) and Jon Fisher (drums).

Following a break to share pot-luck food, the band will invite aspiring vocalists and musicians, as well as seasoned pros, to join them onstage for a "jazz woodshed" session to work on their improvisational skills.

Event producer Samirah Evans says she asked Neville to feature his sons in hopes of demonstrating the valuable opportunity the series offers young musicians to perform in a live setting.

"The Set and Shed was created to inspire artists of all ages, but with a particular emphasis on the youth in our community," said Evans. "I encourage parents to bring their young artists out, and other young people to encourage their peers, to come participate in the jam session that follows the concert."

Admission is by a suggested donation of $10 for adults and $5 for students ages 18 and under, with proceeds going to the scheduled musicians. Guests are also encouraged to bring a potluck dish to share.

"Sam’s Sunday Set and Shed" was conceived by Silktone Productions’ founder Samirah Evans. The monthly music series is based on her own experience as an up-and-coming vocalist in New Orleans, where it was customary for seasoned artists to invite young musicians and singers onstage. She hopes that the casual, family-friendly atmosphere of the Elliot Street Café on a Sunday afternoon, and its downtown location, will encourage young musicians to come and practice their craft.

Silktone Productions acknowledges the Vermont Jazz Center, the Open Music Collective and Lotus Graphics for support of this program.
