CIVIL WAR TALK: The Brattleboro Historical Society’s annual meeting program on Sunday, Nov. 18, at 2 p.m. at the Masonic Center, will feature Civil War reenactor Liam McKone of Cambridge.
McKone will portray Captain John Lonergan, an Irish-born officer whose regiment mustered in as nine-month volunteers at Camp Holbrook here in Brattleboro in October 1862. As Lonergan, the reenactor will describe the history of the Second Vermont Brigade and his personal experiences leading up to and including Gettysburg in July 1863 before returning to Brattleboro to be mustered out.
Camp Holbrook was located on the grounds now occupied by Brattleboro Union High and Brattleboro Area Middle schools on Fairground Road and was also site of a Civil War hospital for wounded and sick veterans. It was called Camp Holbrook in recognition of Vermont’s second Civil War governor, Frederick Holbrook of Brattleboro.
McKone has written a biography of John Lonergan entitled Vermont’s Irish Rebel, and will have copies for sale following his talk and a brief business meeting. McKone serves on the Vermont Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission and is president of the 18th Vermont Regiment, a living history and preservation unit that is organizing commemorative events around the state.
A brief annual membership meeting will be held following the program. Brattleboro Masonic Center is located at 196
