In Bellows Falls...
COMMUNITY CLOSET: Immanuel Church is opening The Community Closet, a thrift store, as part of its outreach ministry to the community. All profits from the sale of clothing and other goods will benefit the wider community through the Community Christmas Fund which helps families in need put holiday meals on their tables; the Great Falls Community Kitchen and Food Pantry which provides a free meal every Mondays at 5 p.m. as well as canned and dry goods for those in need throughout the week; the Great Falls United Network through Southeast Vermont Community Action (SEVCA) which assists people in financial need and operates the Great Falls Warming Shelter; and Parks Place Community Center, a community resource center hosting various health, human services and education programs to the Great Falls region.
Volunteers are needed to sort clothes and other donated goods and/or staff the store during its hours of operation. Donations of clean, used clothing and household items are also welcome.
The Closet is open Wednesdays and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. beginning Saturday, Jan. 26. It is located in the basement space of the church. The Closet is directly accessible via the driveway off School Street that is directly across from the Bellows Falls United Church of Christ and just east of the Bellows Falls Middle School.

In Brattleboro and Westminster...
FREE TAX HELP: The United Way of Windham County is offering free tax help by appointment on Wednesdays at the Marlboro College Graduate Center located at 28 Vernon St. and on Tuesdays at SEVCA, located at 91 Buck Drive in Westminster.
To be eligible for this free service, a person must live or work in Windham County, and their household income must be at or below $51,000.
In addition to helping people prepare their tax returns, an objective of the program is to support individuals who qualify for Earned Income Tax Credit to realize that benefit. The EITC not only can reduce, dollar-for-dollar, the amount of taxes an individual or a couple would otherwise owe, but it also provides for eligible taxpayers to receive a check, sometimes thousands of dollars, if the amount of the credit to which they are entitled exceeds the amount of tax owed.

LGBTQ LAUNCH PARTY: Green Mountain Crossroads, a new organization for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer community, has formed and will hold an official launch party on Friday, Jan. 25, at 6 p.m. at the Backside Café, 24 High St. in Brattleboro.
Green Mountain Crossroads is a non-profit organization with a mission of supporting the local rural LGBTQ community in being visible and connected with each other. Based in Brattleboro, GMC will feature community events, news and information from the tri-state area of southeastern Vermont, southwestern New Hampshire, and northwestern Massachusetts.
One of the groups primary goals is to keep the local LGBTQ community informed of events and activities of interest, and maintain information on resources for LGBTQ individuals. GMC hosts an interactive Community Calendar at its website, www.greenmountaincrossroads.org.
The official launch party is a public event, open to the LGBTQ community and straight allies alike.
Refreshments will be served and drawings for door prizes will take place. The snow date is Friday, Feb. 1.

WINTER SWAP PROGRAM: The Swap Program at the Windham Solid Waste Management District is now on winter hours. The program will be open the second Saturday of each month, weather permitting, from 9 a.m. to noon. The next scheduled opening will be Feb. 9.

The January sale will be the start of a winter clearance and sweaters, jerseys, fleece jackets, slacks, outer ski jackets, hats and scarfs will all be on sale.

FLEA MARKET: Anyone interested in setting up a table at the Jacksonville Ladies Aid Indoor Flea Market on Saturday, Feb. 23, is welcome.
Anything goes at this flea market. Consider selling crafts or attic treasures or clothing that no longer fits.
The market will be held from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Whitingham Municipal Center. An 8-foot table will be available for $15.

HEAT FUND DONATIONS: The Windham County Heat Fund presently has families on the waiting list for fuel. The program is for those either not eligible for current fuel assistance programs or who have run out of their assistance allotments.
There is no overhead, all money received goes directly to buying fuel.
Tax deductible donations may be sent to the Windham County Heat Fund, c/o Richard Davis, 679 Weatherhead Hollow Road, Guilford, VT 05301 or stop by at Brattleboro Savings & Loan Assn., 221 Main St. to donate directly.
