BRATTLEBORO -- Open Music Collective with be celebrating three end of the semester concerts featuring the "Outside-In Band" on Friday, May 10, at 8 p.m., followed by the OMC youth Ensemble on Tuesday, May 14, at 8 p.m., and the "Venerable Sextet" on Wednesday, May 15, at 5:30 p.m.
The "Outside-In Band" is a band led by bassist Jamie MacDonald who is presenting some of his favorite compositions that he has always wanted to present in concert. The set will start with "Meet" by Attila Zoller, with a nod to German expressionism followed by the linear challenge of "Lennie’s Pennies" (Tristano), the polyrhythmic complexity of "El Nino" (Mike Formanek), the beauty of "Mood Indigo" (Duke Ellington) and the many moods of "Sue’s Changes" by Charles Mingus.
The band features Gabby Fluke-Mogul (violin), Joe McConaughy, Ryan Milhaly (sax), Porter Lazzari Fitch (guitar), Kate Parsons (piano) and David Shadduck (drums).
The Youth Ensemble is playing the music of Horace Silver, Les McCann, Dave Holland, Ornette Coleman and Harold Arlen. It features Susan Francy (sax), Ethan Manning (sax), Giannina Gaspero-Beckstrom (trumpet), Sam Lazzaro (drums), Gabby Walton (guitar) and Rob Athanastopoulos (bass). This is a high-energy group playing some very exciting music promising to swing and rock.
The "Venerable Sextet" features the jazz classics "Willow Weep for Me," "Whisper Not," "Sippin at Bells," "Minority," "Island Birdie" and "Little Waltz." This group features Jon Mack and Denis Basset on sax, Rob Fletcher on chromatic harmonic, Lou Erlanger on guitar, Steve Frankel on bass and Lowell Laporte on drums. This is a high-energy set with a group of guys who really enjoy playing with each other.
