The historical, strategic "Civilization" series is to relaunch as a massively multiplayer online game in the form of "Civilization Online," in development at Korean studio XLGames.
Fresh from its dalliances with social gaming in "CivWorld," the series will see players take control of not an entire nation but a single individual within that formative society.
Crafting, combat, and cultural achievements will form part of the experience, with players working together to reach common goals, discovering technological advances and helping shape foreign policies.
XLGames has considerable prestige due to its work on the popular MMO "ArcheAge" as well as the resumé of founder Jake Song and his role in the development of another well-adopted MMO, "Lineage."
Interviews given to Massively and MMORPG indicate that the PC game is likely to adhere to a free-to-play model, but no release date has yet been specified.
