WALPOLE, N.H. -- The Claremont Cardinals upset the first place Chester/ Saxtons River entry, 6-2, in Saturday’s Connecticut River Valley Baseball League playoff game at Hubbard Field.
Claremont jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first three innings and held their foes scoreless through seven innings. Gary Wells got the complete-game victory for the Cardinals and was in complete control for the entire nine innings. Nick Wirkkala got roughed up early before settling down and he went the distance for the Crush.
Big blows by Nate Duford and Jon Nichols highlighted the Cardinals’ attack. Saxtons River ends the season without a title in either the Green Mountain league or the CRVBL despite an overall record of 31-13.
