BRATTLEBORO -- A handful of Division 1 and 2 high school football teams in Vermont still have a chance to be perfect.
The question is, how many of them will remain undefeated through Week 4?
Division 2 bosses Fair Haven and Lyndon each won 28-0 in their latest games, with the Slaters feeding Tyler Rice (166 rushing yards, 2 TDs) and the Vikings getting 114 yards on the ground from workhorse Davis Guyer.
And the three teams atop the Division 1 standings were difficult to stop as well. South Burlington tailback Tanner Contois racked up 210 yards and four touchdowns in a rout on Natowich Field, Middlebury ball carriers Nick Felki (156 yards) and Jacob Trautwein (133 yards) took it to Colchester, and CVU rode quarterback Steele Dubrul's legs to an easy victory over Burlington.
Rutland and Rice, well, they have the best chances to play spoiler. Coming off of a comeback win over MAU, the Raiders will welcome Middlebury on Friday at 7 p.m. And the defending D-2 champion Green Knights will go to Lyndon on Saturday for a 1 p.m. game.
Brattleboro (1-2) and Bellows Falls (1-2) will both be trying to get to .500. The Colonels will play at three-time defending Division 1 champion Hartford on Friday night at 7 and the Terriers will host winless North Country on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Clearly, this isn't the same Hartford team that had won 27 games in a row. The 1-2 Hurricanes were blanked by Middlebury -- they were held to just 118 yards of offense -- and then lost to a Bay State team a week ago.
But can first-year coach John Callahan and the Colonels begin hurting teams with their triple option? So far, passes from athletic quarterback Kyle Patno to the likes of Kassidi Ramirez, Max Bostwick and Tanner Freeman have been the purple and white's best weapon.
As for North Country, they will just be trying to keep it respectable at Hadley Field. In Week 3, the Falcons lost 47-0 to Burr and Burton.
Bob Lockerby's lads will likely be able to name the score, pounding it behind offensive lineman Matt Conkey and company with running backs Kyle O'Rourke, Carson Fullam and Austin Stack.
