RUTLAND -- The Brattleboro Union High School girls ice hockey team was blanked by Rutland, 5-0, in Wednesday’s season opener.

"We improved with each period," said first-year Colonels coach Kraig Laporte. "The girls worked hard and adjusted as the game went on. That was a tough opponent to start out with."

BUHS goalie Alex Fellows faced 65 shots and stopped 60 of them -- none of the goals were soft and Fellows made some incredible saves according to her coach. The purple and white managed just seven shots on the night.

The 0-1 Colonels will play at Woodstock on Saturday at 6:10 p.m.

Grafton Ponds news

GRAFTON -- Grafton Ponds Outdoor Center, one of only five Nordic resorts in Vermont with snowmaking, took advantage of optimal snowmaking weather last week, and has been making snow as temperatures have allowed.

Thanks to its snowmaking system, Grafton Ponds is poised to open Saturday, Dec. 14, with a groomed base-area skiing loop for all abilities. The hours of operation will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Skiers can ski for free on opening day if they bring in a non-perishable food item that will be donated to the Townshend Food Bank.

Grafton Ponds will continue to make snow as temperatures allow, in order to increase the amount of skiable terrain and to build its popular 600-foot snow tubing run in time for the winter holiday.

Grafton Ponds is also extending its early Season Pass pricing through Dec. 20. A special rate for a Family Season Pass of just $199 is offered, making skiing for the whole family affordable and fun.

Nordic skiers should contact the Grafton Ponds information line at 802-843-2400 or visit www.graftonponds.com for the most updated trail conditions information.

Grafton Ponds Outdoor Center offers 15 kilometers of Nordic skiing (with snowmaking on five kilometers), 10 k of snowshoeing, Biathlon, a 600-foot snow tubing hill, sleigh rides and a full array of events throughout the winter season. It is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. In the summer, the Center offers more than 2,000 acres of mountain biking, hiking, canoeing, Biathlon and summer kid’s camps.
