BRATTLEBORO -- It’s been a pretty good week for those with the surname of Rivers.
Doc’s Clippers went 2-1 in the NBA, including victories over the Celtics and 76ers. Phillip fired a pair of touchdown passes in San Diego’s 27-20 upset of the Broncos on Thursday.
And coach Joe Rivers will try and follow suit when his Brattleboro boys basketball team opens up today at Mount Mansfield at 2:30 p.m.
"We have a good number of returning players who understand the value of being part of a team. They look out for one another and are very supportive of our team goals," said Rivers. "We’ve known each other for a while and we recognize that while none of us is perfect, together we can make each of us better and represent our school with character."
The Colonels, who went 6-14 last season, have had a couple of scrimmages to get ready for the Cougars. Rivers said he isn’t sure what his starting lineup will be, but noted that he plans on playing nine or 10 players in each contest.
"Chris McAuliffe and Isaac Roach return with the most varsity experience from last year. Sam Siegel, Connor Elliot-Knaggs, Kyle Patno, Bobby Righi and Kevin Tao also contributed last year and we hope to see them develop into a solid core of seniors who lead the Colonels this season," stated the BUHS coach.
The home opener for the Colonels is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 27, versus Mill River, at 7 p.m.
"We have a strong group of juniors who are pushing the seniors in practice and making our day-to-day workouts pretty competitive. That is very important for our program as we practice way more than we play in games," added Rivers. "Juniors Lynden Bunker, Tanner Freeman, Kassidi Ramirez and Ryan Gilligan have shown promise in the early going."
