Nordic Skiing

CHITTENDEN -- On a perfect day for racing, the BUHS Nordic Ski Team opened its on-snow season at Mountain Top Ski Center on Wednesday. Under cloudy skies and surrounded by mountain views, the team raced on a perfectly groomed 1.5 kilometer course. The freestyle sprint relay race was ideally suited to the snow conditions and to everyone’s first race of the year. Two-person teams alternated to complete four laps.

Brattleboro coaches Charlie La Rosa and Amanda Dixon were very happy with their team’s results. The boy’s varsity race was hotly contested and the Brattleboro teams finished in 5th and 6th place. Oliver Pomazi and Declan King had a total time of 16:22. Because of an odd number of racers, the three-man team of Jon Burdo, Austin Nichols and Colby McGinn finished in 16:22 with the faster skiers’ times counting for the total. King had the 5th fastest individual lap in 3:37.

In the girl’s varsity race, the quickly progressing young women performed admirably. The BUHS team of Nevada Powers and Eve Pomazi finished in 16th place in a time of 21:18 and Katie Reynolds and Catey Yost finished 21st in 24:05.

The JV boy’s teams were the hit of the day, outdistancing all competitors while finishing 1st and 2nd in their one-lap race. Tyler Clement and Spencer Loggia took the top spot in 9:05 while first-time racer Jonah Koch and Phelan Muller pushed them hard at 9:15. Koch outpaced all skiers in the first lap.

The Colonels’ next race is a 4.5-kilometer individual freestyle at Prospect Mountain on Saturday. Start time is 10 a.m.
