BRATTLEBORO -- After losing on the road to their rival on Saturday, the Brattleboro girls basketball team might be returning to Bennington for a Division 1 quarterfinal just a week later.
That is, if the Colonels and Patriots win their playdown games as expected.
On Wednesday night at 7, sixth-seeded Brattleboro (14-6) will host No. 11 Burr and Burton (9-11) and third-ranked MAU (15-4) will welcome No. 14 Spaulding (6-14). If the home teams prevail, the purple and white will head west on Route 9 for a Feb. 22 showdown at 2 p.m.
Mount Anthony Union swept the two regular-season contests, taking the Feb. 4 game at BUHS 68-61 in overtime and winning 56-51 at home on Saturday.
"One of our goals we set on our first day together was for a home playoff game. Goal achieved!" said Brattleboro coach Paul Freed.
The Colonels took a 40-39 lead into the fourth quarter on Saturday, but were unable to hold on. Center Ari Harrison racked up 22 points, 18 rebounds and six steals in the loss. Kayla Savage added 10 points and 10 boards, and Maddie Rollins chipped in with 11 points and five caroms.
Third time’s a charm? Well, you know that Freed and company are trying their best to focus on Burr and Burton -- a team they beat 47-27 and then 53-40 this season.
Admission prices for all BUHS basketball playoff games will be $5 per adult and $4 per student/senior, and will be sold at the door one hour prior to game time. The state tournament is a Vermont Principal’s Association Sponsored event and prices are set by the VPA. Also, no passes, including season passes, will be accepted. All attending playoff games must purchase tickets.
Undefeated Champlain Valley Union (20-0) and Rice Memorial (18-2) were seeded first and second respectively in the 16-team tournament.
In Division 3, three area teams were seeded in the playoffs. Twin Valley is fifth, Leland & Gray 14th and Bellows Falls 15th.
Buddy Hayford’s Wildcats finished the regular season on a remarkable 10-game winning streak. That run included victories over Arlington, Leland & Gray, Green Mountain, Bellows Falls, Black River, Rivendell and Mid Vermont Christian.
Bellows Falls (6-14) will visit No. 2 Williamstown on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Twin Valley (16-4) will host Sharon (8-11) on Wednesday at 7 p.m., and Leland & Gray (6-14) will play at No. 3 Oxbow on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
