WESTMINSTER -- Five members of the Bellows Falls-Hartford wrestling team participated in the end of the year JV state tournament, held Saturday at Spaulding High, in Barre.

Three members of the junior high program also participated at the JH state tournament which occurred at the same location.

Leading the way was Jaleel Denson, who won all three of his matches in the 195-pound weight class to win the championship. Jaleel defeated his opponent from the MAU JV team in the finals.

Cameron Viens placed fourth at the 120-pound weight class. Kevin Gosslant-Johnson placed sixth. Gosslant-Johnson had an exciting day with two impressive back-to-back wins. Bryce Smith and Shane Brown also participated.

On the junior high level, Lucas Saunders placed second and Spencer Clark ended the day placing fourth. Austin Taylor also participated in the event.

The Bellows Falls-Hartford varsity team travels to MAU in Bennington on Friday and Saturday, to participate in the two-day varsity state championships. Wrestling is expected to start at 5 p.m. on Friday evening and at 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning.

Boys varsity basketball
playdowns begin today

BRATTLEBORO -- The Vermont state boys varsity basketball tournament schedule has been announced and division playdowns will begin this week.

In Division 1, tenth-seeded Brattleboro (10-10) will play at No. 7 Middlebury (11-9) on Thursday at 7. The winner will play the winner of the Burlington-Spaulding game, which will be held Wednesday. An undefeated Burr and Burton holds the top spot and they will host North Country tonight at 7.

Also seeded in the tenth spot is the D2 Bellows Falls (7-13) who will play at Vergennes (9-11) on Wednesay at 7. U-32 at 16-4 leads the pack, and they will host Montpelier tonight at 6.

Twin Valley (19-1) is the top-seeded Division 4 team, and will host No. 16 Websterville Baptist this evening at 7. The Wildcats on Friday will play the winner of the No. 8 Twinfield-No. 9 Mid-Vermont Christian matchup.

LL sign-ups at the Legion

BRATTLEBORO -- There will be another round of Little League sign-ups on Wednesday and Thursday, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the American Legion on Linden Street.

Children between 9 and 12 years old on May 1 are eligible to enroll. The District has been expanded to include Brattleboro, Brookline, Dummerston, Guilford, Halifax, Marlboro, Newfane, Putney, and Vernon.

Potential players new to the league should present birth certificates at the sign-ups.

Children will be eligible for try-outs on Saturday, March 8. Returning players must register as well, but need not try out nor present birth certificates.
